The political party issued a statement denouncing an event organized by the Roriz Carnival Commission at the parish leisure park, aimed at resuming bullfighting activities in a municipality that has not promoted such practices for years.
Hugo Alexandre Trindade, spokesperson for PAN Porto’s district commission, is quoted in the statement emphasizing that “holding bullfighting shows in a municipal leisure park, with potential exposure of children to these practices, not only contradicts animal welfare but also undermines the cultural values that should guide democratic coexistence.”
“For PAN, this represents an unacceptable setback in the ethical and civilizational values that should guide local public policies, especially those involving municipal spaces,” the party highlights.
PAN addressed questions to the local council regarding whether “the proper licensing for the event was requested and granted, if the council considers bullfighting shows compatible with animal welfare principles and the cultural and recreational mission of municipal spaces, and what the grounds are for possibly authorizing an event that normalizes violence against animals, particularly in front of children and young people.”
The party insists that “events involving the exploitation and suffering of animals should not take place in a society striving to be more just and compassionate,” reminding that “there are numerous cultural, recreational, and sporting alternatives that are healthier and more inclusive, promoting community bonds without resorting to violence or the instrumentalization of living beings.”
PAN anticipates a “formal response from the Santo Tirso municipality, in accordance with the right of participation and administrative information,” reiterating its commitment to fighting for a country where “culture is not built at the expense of any living being’s suffering.”
Attempts to gain a response from the City Council by Lusa have so far been unsuccessful.
