A frequent occurrence of fires, which began at night in areas close to homes between the parishes of Abação and Pinheiro, led to the identification of a 49-year-old local resident as the suspected perpetrator, according to a statement by the PJ.
During the investigation, the criminal investigation force found strong evidence suggesting that the suspect ignited forested areas near his own home and an abandoned house during the early hours.
The fires occurred in places prone to spreading into large forested areas, heightening the risk due to the existing fuel load and the region’s terrain, which includes residential clusters, raising significant concern among the local community, the PJ added.
The detained individual, who may have an alcohol addiction, is scheduled to appear before judicial authorities today for an initial interrogation and determination of preventive measures.
