“The fire, which began with considerable intensity and in a highly violent manner, is now in a more favorable situation. As night fell, progress became more positive,” stated the commander of the Viseu Firefighters, Rui Nogueira.
Rui Nogueira further noted that the fire “managed to reach the municipality of Vila Nova de Paiva, in the Queiriga area, but thanks to the rapid response of the firefighters and the high quality of their work, it was possible to contain” the flames in that zone.
He also confirmed that “there was never any risk to the population,” though the fire had resulted in “three minor injuries among firefighters, not four as initially reported.”
The fire alarm was raised at 11:56 AM, in Maeira de Baixo, in the Union of Parishes of Barreiros and Cepões, in the municipality of Viseu.
By 10:45 PM, 415 personnel were battling the flames, supported by 149 vehicles, according to information available on the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
