The Cantata is based on 24 texts and poems, some irreverent, satirical, and even obscene, dating from the 11th to the 13th centuries, written in Latin, Provençal, and German, from the eponymous medieval manuscript collection, and was composed by the German Carl Orff, having premiered in 1937, in Frankfurt.
The opera season opens at the Teatro Camões, as the Teatro Nacional de S. Carlos (TNSC) building is undergoing renovation as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
The cantata will be performed by the choirs of the Escola de Música do Colégio Moderno and the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, accompanied by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, with a total of 200 musicians on stage, conducted by maestro Antonio Pirolli.
Soprano Carla Caramujo, tenor Marco Alves dos Santos, and baritone Christina Luján will perform as soloists at this concert.
The lyrical programming continues on October 2 with the presentation of the diptych by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), ‘Suor Angélica’ and ‘Gianni Schicchi’, with staging by Carmine De Amicis.
A “new production [that] proposes a journey from the divine environment and moving tragedy to the infernal tone and harsh comedy, celebrating the universality of the human experience,” according to TNSC’s presentation.
