Portugal achieved the “unimaginable thing”: “Public accounts balance”

During a reception for representatives of the Portuguese community and Portuguese UN employees at a New York hotel, the head of state, in the presence of the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, spoke on Portugal’s economic situation.

“If I were to speak about the Portuguese economy, to emphasize our accomplishments, it’s not just because of the presence of our minister, but because we have reached an unimaginable point: not only balancing public accounts but achieving a surplus,” he stated.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa remarked that Portugal now faces the “headache” of discussing whether there is “a 0.1 increase or decrease in terms of surplus or deficit,” commenting further: “Previously, this was a ‘disease’ of other countries; now it’s Portugal’s.”

The President described Portugal as a nation concerned with financial balance, employment rate, and economic growth, “growing at nearly the highest level within Europe,” and “offering security, stability, and a unique human environment.”

Concluding his speech, as in previous gatherings with emigrants and Luso-descendants, the head of state exclaimed that Portugal “is the best country in the world.”

“It is a pride to have citizens like you, demonstrating the resilience of the Portuguese people. We have nine centuries of history, continuously improving, stronger, more sophisticated, more supportive, more influential, because we are better,” he addressed the people in the room.
