Chega Deputy Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro resigns from office

The Chega party’s MP Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro resigned from his parliamentary post on Monday. The group confirmed Ribeiro’s resignation “under the terms of Article 7 of the Statute of Deputies.” His seat will be filled by Rui Fernandes.

Although the reasons behind this decision were not disclosed, on August 22, Mithá Ribeiro stepped down from the party’s vice-presidency after being removed by the party leader, André Ventura, from his role as coordinator of the studies office.

At the time, Mithá Ribeiro, who was elected for the Leiria constituency, indicated in a statement that he had previously made the same request on July 9, but with the decree removing him from the post, resigning became “inevitable.”

By late August, Mithá Ribeiro shared an email sent to André Ventura requesting that his resignation be accepted “with immediate effect.”

Mithá Ribeiro and the Violation of the Deputies’ Code of Conduct

In April, the Parliamentary Transparency Commission concluded that Mithá Ribeiro violated the Code of Conduct by “objectively” disrespecting socialist MP Isabel Moreira in a text posted on social media.

This conclusion was detailed in a report from the inquiry process, prepared by Social Democratic Party MP António Rodrigues, which received only Chega’s dissenting vote.

In February, Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro published an article against socialist Isabel Moreira titled ‘A morte caminha entre vivos,’ addressing the legalization of euthanasia, abortion, and gender reassignment surgeries.

Following the publication of this text, Isabel Moreira, constitutionalist and member of the National Secretariat of the Socialist Party, lodged a complaint against Chega MP Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro.

The approved conclusions from this inquiry process considered expressions used by Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro, such as “… the disgrace with which she contaminates everything around her with her depressive existence that glorifies death” and “the alleged one was born to propagate the motto of her diabolical existence,” particularly directed at “socialist Isabel Moreira,” and the characterization as “feminazi Isabel Moreira,” to be objectively disrespectful.

“For this reason, it is concluded that MP Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro, in the publication subject to this inquiry, did not observe the duty of respect for MP Isabel Moreira, a duty imposed by Article 5 of the Deputies’ Code of Conduct to the Assembly of the Republic, concerning the duties of civility and institutional loyalty,” stated the document approved by the Commission.

Gabriel Mithá Ribeiro was the head of the Chega list for the Leiria electoral circle, having been elected in the XV, XVI, and XVII legislatures. He held the position of vice-president of the party and coordinator of the studies office.

Mithá Ribeiro is a candidate for Chega in the municipal elections for the presidency of Pombal City Council on October 12.
