“We are very open to evaluating the proposal from the Order of Nurses to ensure the monitoring of low-risk pregnant women by specialist nurses in maternal and obstetric health for women without a family doctor,” affirmed Ana Paula Martins, who is currently speaking in parliament.
During the regular hearing in the Health Committee, the minister stated that the monitoring of pregnancies by nurses must be carried out in coordination with general and family medicine and hospital obstetric units, with agreed protocols defined by the Directorate-General for Health’s standards.
“Pregnant women cannot be without monitoring; specialist nurses play a fundamental role in maternal and obstetric health, and this is already a reality in many countries,” noted Ana Paula Martins, adding that “there is no reason why this model should not also be implemented in Portugal, with agreements between various entities.”
