Means focused on combating the reactivation of the fire in Aljezur

The intensification of the fire that began on Sunday in Aljezur and spread to the neighboring municipality of Lagos was due to a resurgence in the Feiteira area, resulting in four projections on one flank of the fire. At that time, the firefighting resources were engaged in consolidation and extinction efforts, as explained by Abel Gomes, the deputy commander of the Algarve’s Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection (CREPC).

In a summary around 11 p.m., a source from the Algarve’s Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection reported that efforts continued to combat the resurgence.

The source noted that at this time, there were no localities at risk.

According to the information on the ANEPC website, at 11:15 p.m., 655 personnel were on-site, supported by 227 land vehicles.

As stated by Abel Gomes earlier in the afternoon, the projections expanded the fire perimeter to the east, “increasing the fire-affected area from 30% to 40%.”

The rescue operations commander also indicated an estimated 2,000 hectares burned in Aljezur and Lagos.

Abel Gomes mentioned that during the afternoon, there were two other fire ignitions in São Marcos da Serra, in the Silves municipality, which necessitated redirecting aerial resources to prevent another major fire in a high-risk area.

Abel Gomes clarified that since Sunday, there have been only three injuries needing hospital care, along with nine individuals aided on-site, who were not classified as injuries.
