IL will take PS’s place on the organizing committee for November 25.

PS declines to participate in the committee organizing the commemorations of November 25, 1975. The position on the organizing committee will be assumed by IL,” reads a statement released by the party.

This morning, PS announced that it will not join the government-created committee for the 50th anniversary of November 25, citing an agenda to “rewrite history” by obscuring the “central role” of Mário Soares and PS, while announcing its own program.

In a press conference at the parliament, PS parliamentary leader Eurico Brilhante Dias argued that November 25 “cannot be separated” from April 25 and that its celebrations should occur within the framework of the National Commission for the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974.

“This is why the Socialist Party cannot support this resolution by the Council of Ministers, nor this committee that separates November 25 from April 25, 1974, not only because it hides the central role of Mário Soares and the Socialist Party but also because it largely aims to rewrite history and create a narrative of confrontation and polarization that will not find a response in the Socialist Party,” he criticized.

Lieutenant-General Alípio Tomé Pinto will chair the committee created by the government to promote and organize the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the November 25, 1975 military operation, the Ministry of National Defense stated to Lusa last week.

On August 28, the government, convened in the Council of Ministers, approved the creation of a committee to promote and organize the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the November 25, 1975 military operation.
