PS agenda optional debate on conditions for the start of the school year

Eurico Brilhante Dias addressed journalists following the leaders’ conference meeting, advocating that the political debate should focus on the “evident problems of the country” immediately after the municipal elections on October 12, particularly concerning the start of the school year.

“The Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, cannot answer a straightforward question: How many students lack a teacher in at least one subject? He contradicts himself by presenting a set of different percentages,” accused the leader of the PS Parliamentary Group.

Eurico Brilhante Dias also expressed the expectation that the Government will participate in this debate in the Assembly of the Republic to clarify the conditions for starting the school year in Portugal.

“At the start of parliamentary work, the PS Parliamentary Group presented a set of initiatives in non-higher education, particularly in school management, the democratic participation of students in student associations, and a resolution project concerning the revision of the student’s statute. This set of proposals will surely be part of the debate scheduled for October 16,” he added.

The spokesman for the leaders’ conference, social-democratic deputy Francisco Figueira, stated that during today’s meeting, they also scheduled the preparatory debate for the European Council, with the presence of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, for October 22.

“Various parties and the Government also scheduled a set of legislative initiatives of different kinds. The debates on these initiatives will take place on September 29 and 30 and also on October 16 and 17,” he added.
