During a bi-weekly debate with the Prime Minister, André Ventura questioned whether the government has submitted a new immigration law project following the Constitutional Court’s declaration of unconstitutionality and the President’s veto.
“We don’t know anything,” he remarked, expressing surprise at the news of the changes.
The leader of Chega noted that “the PSD does not have a majority here in this Assembly of the Republic” and argued that “arrogance is a bad advisor.”
Ventura also refused to “go back” on changes to the bill after the veto by “a President at the end of his mandate.”
In response, the Prime Minister returned the accusations of arrogance, asserting that “respecting the functioning of democracy, the rules of democracy, is necessary.”
“Negotiation is not the imposition of André Ventura’s will. He must learn to live with the rules of democracy,” stated Luís Montenegro.
The head of government also pointed out that the President has “greater representativeness” than Ventura, as “he was elected with more than 50% [of the votes] in the first round.”
