Circulation on the Lisbon Metro normalized after disruptions

Disruptions in the Metro de Lisboa train service were anticipated today between 9:15 and 11:45 am, due to a workers’ assembly.

Train operations normalized at 1:15 pm, as confirmed by a company spokesperson.

Sara Gligó, representing the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions (Fectrans), stated that disruptions began around 9:00 am and were expected until 11:45 am, even though the workers’ meeting ended at 11:00 am.

The assembly followed a meeting held on Tuesday with the Metro de Lisboa’s Board of Directors.

Anabela Carvalheira, another Fectrans representative, explained that the meeting was convened to approve a negotiation proposal for 2025, after adjustments by the Metro’s Board related to specific agreement clauses.

She attributed delays in finalizing the 2025 negotiations to the new board not yet being instated, clarifying that “it’s not a bad agreement” as there are no worker rights losses.

Anabela Carvalheira emphasized that “no social peace pact” was signed, and preparation for the 2026 agreement is underway, with a focus on salary increases to counteract cost-of-living hikes. This proposal is expected by October 31.

The union continues to push for better working conditions, reduced work hours, and increased meal allowances, criticizing the “pay as little as possible” policy.

No further strikes or protests are anticipated until at least October 31, when the 2026 proposal is submitted, according to Anabela Carvalheira. The negotiation outcome remains uncertain.

Metro workers previously held partial strikes on September 9 and 11, without minimum services decreed.

The demands include increased meal, holiday, and Christmas allowances and amendments to maximum weekly working hours.

Linha Metropolitano de Lisboa operates four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia), and Red (Aeroporto-São Sebastião).

Services usually run from 6:30 am to 1:00 am.
