Man arrested in Sintra on suspicion of assaulting ex-partner

In a statement, Cometlis reports that a man was arrested on Friday during an operation conducted in the municipalities of Sintra and Cascais, which also resulted in the arrest of the suspect’s mother and grandmother for illegal possession of firearms.

The police state that the 26-year-old suspect is accused of assaulting and verbally abusing his 22-year-old ex-partner, with whom he has two children aged 4 and 5. He is also accused of preventing her from contacting the children.

“Throughout the relationship with the victim, the suspect insulted her and accused her of having multiple extramarital affairs, even doing so on social media in a bid to defame her. He also physically assaulted her, even when she was pregnant, by choking her and ejecting her from the home, forcing her to sleep on the building’s stairs,” the statement elaborates.

The man was eventually arrested at his mother’s residence in Sintra, where authorities seized a shotgun and 10 cartridges.

The suspect’s mother, who owned the weapon but did not have the necessary permit, was arrested and notified to appear in court.

Additionally, a .22 caliber rifle was seized at the suspect’s grandmother’s house in Cascais, leading to her arrest for illegal possession of a firearm.

Both women have since been released.

The man was brought before the Cascais court for the initial judicial hearing, where he was ordered to refrain from contacting the victim, maintain a controlled distance monitored electronically, and report weekly to the local police station.

The couple’s two children were handed over to their mother by decision of the Family and Minors Court of Cascais.
