The Porto Court of Appeal has ordered the retrial of César Boaventura in connection with Operation Malapata, where the businessman was initially sentenced to a three-year suspended prison term.
This announcement was made by Boaventura himself on his Facebook page, stating that after being made a “scapegoat to attack Benfica,” the “justice system has given its first shout to Portuguese football by ordering the trial to reopen.”
“At the first instance, I was silenced, my witnesses were silenced, I was denied the right to defense, and attempts were made to bury me alive for crimes I never committed. The Appeal has rectified this injustice, ordered that the witnesses be heard, and that my evidence be considered,” he continues, referring to Operation Malapata, which is related to player transfers and bank accounts that handled thousands of euros.
