Triplets are born in a Viseu hospital. It is the first time in a decade.

Three baby girls, born as triplets, were welcomed at the end of August at São Teotónio Hospital in Viseu. This rare event had not occurred in over a decade.

According to the local health unit of Viseu Dão-Lafões, Margarida, Matilde, and Melissa “are in good health,” and despite the mother’s initial nervousness, the delivery “proceeded normally.”

“Our team had not attended a triplet birth for over ten years, making this occasion even more special,” a statement released on Thursday revealed.

The parents, Nelly Santos and João Pedro Fernandes, described their initial reaction to expecting triplets as one of “surprise, followed by some apprehension.”

“However, a smooth pregnancy allowed the couple some comfort as they embark on parenthood for the first time,” the Viseu Dão-Lafões health unit shared.

The names of the girls—Margarida, Matilde, and Melissa—were chosen spontaneously but retained a symbolic link by sharing the same initial, which the parents found “fun and meaningful.”

The young parents acknowledge that adapting to a new routine will be challenging, but they believe that family support will be crucial in overcoming any major obstacles.

In their note, the Viseu Dão-Lafões health unit extended “best wishes to the family, hoping for much health in this new life phase.”
