Eighteen prominent figures who have held key positions in the United States submitted a document to the Supreme Court in support of Governor Lisa Cook. Among these figures are former governors Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke, and Janet Yellen, who also served as the Treasury Secretary under Democratic President Joe Biden, and Henry Paulson, the Treasury Secretary under Republican President George W. Bush.
They argued that if the judges validate the dismissal, “it will threaten the independence” of the Federal Reserve (Fed) and “public confidence.” In the past, Congress “voluntarily decided that the Federal Reserve would be an independent and unique entity, completely shielded from political pressures that could favor short-term economic gains at the expense of long-term stability and growth.”
Trump has sought to remove Cook since the end of August, accusing her of lying to banks to obtain personal real estate credit. In response, Lisa Cook took the matter to court to remain in her position. Within the framework of an urgent process, Trump was defeated in the first instance and on appeal. Last week, he turned to the Supreme Court, which holds a conservative majority, to try to formalize his intention.
