Launch of the consultation for the transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive

The decree translating the RED III directive, which will establish targets for the share of renewable energy, entered public consultation today for a period of 30 days, announced the government.

“The decree, which will update national targets for the incorporation of renewable energy into the country’s consumption, as well as the necessary mechanisms for its implementation and monitoring, is now in public consultation on ConsultaLex for the next 30 days. This partially fulfills the transposition of Directive (EU) 2023/2413, known as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III),” stated the Ministry of Environment and Energy in a press release.

The public consultation aims to gather contributions from citizens and companies and is considered “a decisive phase in the transposition process of a European Directive that will be crucial for the implementation of national energy policy, aligning Portugal with international commitments,” emphasized Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho, as quoted in the same note.

This decree will also set targets for renewable energy consumption in buildings, industry, heating and cooling, and will complementarily strengthen sustainability criteria and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the production and use of biofuels, bioliquids, and biomass, as well as renewable fuels of non-biological origin and recycled carbon fuels.

It will further introduce mechanisms that ensure the identification of origin and enable traceability and transparency in the use of renewable energy sources.
