Common Front announces Public Service strike for October 24

The Frente Comum has announced plans to hold a nationwide public administration workers’ strike on October 24, if the government fails to reach an agreement with the union. “We are going to promote a 24-hour national strike by public administration workers on October 24, if the Government does not agree to a deal with us,” stated Sebastião Santana, the coordinator of the Frente Comum, to journalists after the first negotiation meeting with Marisa Garrido, the Secretary of State for Public Administration, at the Ministry of Finance in Lisbon.

The union revealed that the government proposed salary increases of 56.58 euros in 2026 and 60.52 euros in both 2027 and 2028, aligning with the agreement signed in 2024, and extending the agreement until 2029 with an additional increase of 60.52 euros.

The union condemned the proposal as “unacceptable,” both when it was initially presented and in light of the rising cost of living. “We continue with the same salaries, which means we are on a path to impoverishment,” emphasized Sebastião Santana. He pointed out that “the government has all the means to reverse this process and could avert the strike, but there’s currently no indication this will happen.”
