The Public Security Police (PSP) detained a 16-year-old and his 37-year-old father on September 23 in Lisbon.
In a statement, the PSP reported the teenager was arrested on suspicion of possessing a prohibited weapon, and his father was detained for resistance and coercion against an officer.
The authorities received a report about a group of youths with a weapon near a school.
Upon arrival, they approached the group and discovered one of the youths was carrying a knife with a 19-centimeter blade.
The teenager claimed he carried the knife for self-defense, citing previous attacks by other youths.
Officers confiscated the weapon and detained the youth, taking him to the station for further procedures.
The teenager’s father appeared at the station, reportedly acting “aggressively” to question the situation.
Upon seeing his son, he attempted to interfere by grabbing the police officers’ arms, making it necessary to use force to stop him. The PSP stated he issued verbal threats and resisted legal commands.
Given the escalation, necessary and proportional force was used to maintain public order and safety, leading to his arrest.
After legal procedures, the youth was instructed to appear at Lisbon’s District Court for potential measures, while his father was detained at Cometlis facilities before facing a judicial authority and given Identity and Residence obligations.
