At the sidelines of the 3rd Liberal Professional Forum in Porto, António José Seguro voiced that the country is in a challenging and demanding situation, emphasizing that the President of the Republic should unite efforts and build bridges not only within the political system but also between political structures and society, as well as within the society itself.
“What I propose for the country is that, with me, the country gains a President of the Republic who acts as an arbiter, an independent President, who expects every Portuguese, every party, and every entity to contribute their best to address emerging issues,” he stated.
Seguro assured that if he gains the trust of the Portuguese people, he will serve as a discreet yet efficient President of the Republic.
“What do I mean by this? Perhaps, you will not see me every night on the news commenting on every issue,” he noted.
The former secretary-general of the PS outlined that the President of the Republic has a unique space to work and assist.
“I will not be a shadow prime minister in Belém. I find that absurd,” he concluded.
Seguro expressed his intention to collaborate with leading partners to address the country’s current issues, which he described as “quite severe,” highlighting challenges in aging, health, and housing.
“And we have very fragile economic growth,” he added.
In his view, these are the pressing matters for the Portuguese people, which is why everything possible must be done to help the country become excellent and fair, he stated.
“The Portuguese are struggling, facing many difficulties, therefore, our role is to focus on solutions to address the issues of the Portuguese,” he considered.
