“There are candidates who do not want to be presidents,” points out Gouveia e Melo

“I think something a bit strange is happening, it seems like we’re in a second round of the legislative elections where most candidates want to secure their electorate or are fighting for a future position in terms of the legislative electorate and are not truly interested in the presidential elections,” said Gouveia e Melo on the sidelines of the 3rd Liberal Professional Forum in Porto.

In his opinion, this is concerning because elections should not be confused.

The presidential elections, scheduled for January, are for those who “truly have the desire” to be President of the Republic and thereby contribute to the development of Portugal, he pointed out.

And not for settling scores, securing the electorate, or for future projects, he noted.

“I think there are candidates who don’t want to be presidents, I think that’s evident, it seems evident to me that there are candidates who don’t want to be presidents and are in a party logic,” he highlighted.

This is why the presidential candidate believed there is a more legislative logic than a presidential one in these elections.

When asked which candidates these are, Gouveia e Melo did not want to name names.

“Don’t make me say it, the journalists [present] know as well as I do,” he concluded.
