Man arrested in Algés after years of terrorizing grandparents he lived with

The Metropolitan Command of Lisbon’s PSP announced the arrest at approximately 12:30 PM in the parish of Algés, Linda-a-Velha, and Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo, located in the municipality of Oeiras, Lisbon district, following a detention warrant issued by the Judicial Authority.

The PSP noted that the investigation covers “an extended period,” with the suspect’s grandmother diagnosed with dementia and under medication for depression, while the grandfather suffers from reduced mobility and poor hearing.

The suspect has already appeared for the initial judicial interrogation, resulting in the imposition of measures including a no-contact order with the victims, prohibition from residing at their home, and weekly check-ins with authorities.

Financially dependent on the victims, the man has been living with his grandparents since the age of 18 and is described by the PSP as “a frequent consumer of narcotics and alcohol.”

According to the police, the man persistently demanded money from his grandmother “to support his addictions, using intimidation, insults, and explicit threats.”

“Upon the victim’s refusal to meet his demands, the suspect’s aggression intensified, and he has previously thrown objects at the grandparents, causing pain and physical distress,” the PSP explains.

Furthermore, when the grandparents were absent, the suspect sold various household appliances and items to acquire drugs, resulting in significant financial losses.

The repetitive behavior of the grandson forced the grandmother to adopt protective strategies, such as sleeping with her purse to prevent theft, the statement adds.

“The situation led to psychological exhaustion in the victims, who expressed constant fear for their safety and requested urgent distancing and protection measures through teleassistance,” the PSP note highlights.

Based on the compiled evidence, which includes personal statements from the victims, photographic records of the damage to the residence, and the defendant’s criminal history, authorities deemed the arrest “an essential measure to safeguard the physical and psychological integrity of the victims and prevent the continuation of criminal activity.”
