Life expectancy at birth increases to 81.49 years in Portugal

The national estimates indicate life expectancies of 78.73 years for men and 83.96 years for women, marking an increase of 0.36 years (4.3 months) for men and 0.29 years (3.5 months) for women compared to 2021-2023, specified the INE in a report published online today.

By NUTS II region, the highest life expectancy was recorded in the north, with 82.13 years for the total population. For men, this means 79.47 years, and for women, 84.48 years.

Looking at the NUTS III regions, the highest life expectancy at birth was recorded in the Cávado: 82.94 years, according to the same source.

Life expectancy at age 65 in Portugal for the period 2022-2024 was estimated at 20.02 years for the total population.

At age 65, men could expect to live 18.30 years and women 21.35 years, representing an increase of 0.30 years for men and 0.24 years for women relative to 2021-2023.

“By NUTS II region, in the triennium 2022-2024, the highest life expectancy at age 65 was recorded in the Northern region for the total population (20.42 years) and for men (18.78 years), and in the Central region for women (21.77 years),” reads the INE report.

By NUTS III region, the Cávado and the Ave recorded “the highest values” of life expectancy at age 65: 21.00 and 20.80 years, respectively.
