Association of Victims of Sexual Abuse in the Church in Protest Today in the Parliament

The protest takes place a day after the CEP announced that it had validated 77 out of the 84 financial compensation requests received, and the compensation setting committee is expected to begin operations later this month in September.

In statements to Lusa, António Grosso, a member of Coração Silenciado, expressed that the committee for financial compensation for victims of sexual abuse should have started its work on the first day of September. Despite CEP’s indication that this committee will commence this month, “it is not known when it will be complete, as it is comprised of seven members.”

The association Coração Silenciado further criticizes the process of interviewing victims, who in recent months have recalled the sexual abuse they suffered, describing the process as “a very harsh re-victimization process” and alleging a “lack of transparency” by the CEP.

The protest will take place in front of the Assembly of the Republic, also criticizing the “inactive attitude” of the Portuguese state, “for not having done anything or promoted anything special on this matter,” added António Grosso.
