The Secretary-General of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) visited Monforte in the Portalegre district this morning. Monforte’s council has been led by the CDU coalition since 2013, despite Chega coming first in most of its parishes in the recent legislative elections, with one exception taken by the Socialist Party (PS).
In a speech delivered at a town square before a modest gathering, Paulo Raimundo emphasized the credibility and visible achievements of the CDU’s work, stating, “Those familiar with CDU’s efforts trust and appreciate our tangible accomplishments.”
He lauded the CDU’s capability to mobilize support by highlighting, “This is a significant asset; it not only draws more people into our cause, fostering hope, but it also curbs misinformation and divisive rhetoric,” in a clear reference to Chega.
Paulo Raimundo underscored that CDU’s initiatives cater to all citizens.
“Our work does not discriminate based on skin color, religious beliefs, or any other personal affiliations. It is for everyone’s benefit,” he asserted.
Speaking to journalists later, Raimundo expressed confidence that the CDU will retain control of Monforte’s council. He cited the local populace’s knowledge of the coalition’s candidates and their commitment to addressing residents’ issues as key strengths.
“This gives us an assurance no other party can claim. Many voters, despite choosing different parties in legislative or European ballots, trust the CDU in local elections due to our proven track record,” he remarked.
In his address, Raimundo criticized the PS, highlighting that Monforte’s residents have experienced the consequences of choosing alternative leaderships, where the PS was the only other party to have governed.
“The people remember the unreliability of promises made by those who appear during election periods with no accountability for past actions,” he noted with emphasis.
Raimundo assured that Monforte won’t regress, stating, “This town is meant to progress, and only CDU can ensure that,” urging supporters to promote their achievements and seek electoral support actively.
“The CDU will achieve a significant victory here in Monforte,” he predicted.
Fernando Saião, the current vice-president of the CDU-led council since 2013, is standing as the party’s candidate for the upcoming municipal elections, as the current president, Gonçalo Lagem, is ineligible to run again due to term limits.
The council currently comprises four CDU members and one from the PS, with candidacies declared by CDU, PS, Chega, and the independent Monforte Citizens’ Movement (MCCM).
