
A suspect was apprehended at 05:20 by officers of the Public Security Police (PSP) from the Police Division of Amadora, as per a statement from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) of the PSP.
The arrest followed an emergency call to 112 reporting a man causing disturbances inside a place of worship while wielding bladed weapons.
Upon arrival, police officers heard screams inside and proceeded with a tactical entry to ensure their safety and that of others present, it was stated.
The Cometlis also disclosed that the suspect is a foreign national and is currently detained at the Lisbon Metropolitan Command’s detention facilities, awaiting a preliminary judicial hearing at the court on suspicion of aggravated threat and qualified damage offenses.
According to witnesses quoted in the statement, the man allegedly made death threats and caused significant damage inside the mosque, including the destruction of windows and other property. The primary victim, a religious leader, managed to protect himself by barricading in a room until the arrival of the PSP.
The incident occurred at the Damaia Mosque—Masjid Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq RA in Amadora, with no injuries reported.
The PSP further noted that the bladed weapons were confiscated and the damages documented for investigative purposes.
