Portuguese music market grew to almost 40 million euros

A digital segment experienced a 9% growth in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2024, representing approximately 44% of total sales, as reported in a newly released Audiogest report.

The report states, “National digital sales revenue in the first half of this year increased by 9% compared to the first half of last year.” Sales amounted to 39.99 million euros, with 17.97 million euros from digital sales.

The document highlights “a relevant niche among collectors” in the area of records, noting that national physical sales revenue in the first half of this year fell by 6% compared to the same period last year, totaling 4.83 million euros.

CD sales dropped by 20%, yet vinyl “leads the physical market, accounting for 74% of sales” in the segment.

Regarding Neighboring Rights, collected and distributed to producers and artists, the total reached 16.88 million euros, marking a 10% increase from the same period in 2024.

“The new data confirms the vitality of the Portuguese music industry and its ability to adapt to transforming consumption habits,” Audiogest emphasizes, acknowledging “sectoral fluctuations” but affirming that “the Portuguese music market continues to grow.”

“In the first half of 2025, more than three thousand Portuguese-language music releases were recorded by Audiogest’s members, with 75% of these works authored by artists with Portuguese nationality,” the report reveals.

In the same statement, Audiogest’s general director, Miguel Carretas, highlights the international “recognition and admiration” for Portuguese music, although “its value as an industry and its potential economic contribution continue to be frequently underestimated.”

Music “is an industry that generates value, capable of creating wealth and enriching culture,” states Miguel Carretas.

“It’s urgent for political decision-makers to recognize the weight of the music industry and preserve its future amid increasing challenges from artificial intelligence,” he warns.

Concerning synchronization revenues, which involve the licensing of music with images for films, series, advertising, and video games, digital content in the first half of this year saw a 27% decline compared to the first half of 2024.

The report also evaluated other data, notably the most listened to on streaming platforms, with standout artists Plutónio, Nilo, Napa, and Calema, while radio airplay highlighted Plutónio, Mizzy Miles, Slow J, Lon3r Johny, ProfJam, and Dillaz.

Regarding Portuguese albums, “the most listened to” included Calema, Mizzy Miles, Slow J, Lon3r Johny & ProfJam, and Dillaz.

Audiogest clarifies: “This report follows industry best practices and methodology in accordance with the guidelines of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The figures presented correspond to the pre-VAT earnings generated from sales conducted in Portugal, declared by associates, and to a market coverage rate attempting to estimate sales volume from producers who did not report data to Audiogest.”
