The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Chega have reportedly reached an agreement to approve the new version of the Foreigners Law in the Assembly of the Republic this Tuesday.
The two parties are said to have met in recent hours and arrived at a “general understanding,” enabling the law’s passage.
Negotiations extended into the early morning hours.
To secure Chega’s support, André Ventura had stipulated that a clause be included requiring immigrants to contribute to social security for five years before qualifying for social aid.
After three days of discussions, PSD and Chega are believed to have agreed on a general formulation of this issue, committing to future development of a separate bill regarding immigrants’ access to social benefits.
The debate in the Assembly of the Republic, with all parties’ participation, has already commenced.
