‘Book of Gifts’, the comfort (by Lucy Claire Dunbar) we need

Lucy Caire Dunbar is a British illustrator and designer who has gained online popularity through her illustrations of “digital watercolors.”

Lucy frequently pays tribute to well-known personalities such as Queen Elizabeth II, Matthew Perry, and Taylor Swift, as well as significant moments in history.

An example is the Covid-19 pandemic, which she depicted in various ways, as well as the death of Portuguese international player Diogo J. and his brother, also a footballer, André Silva, in a tragic car accident on July 3, 2025, in Spain.

In her daily life, Lucy strives to “capture the little magical moments of life.” She lives and breathes drawing and shares her work daily on Instagram, where she is followed by 640,000 people.

Her artistic journey is inspiring. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes from a young age, the Briton temporarily lost her vision in her early twenties. Once she regained it, she promised herself to draw every day, a commitment that led to her tremendous online success.

After years of sharing drawings with motivational quotes—sold through her website Lucy Claire Illustration—the artist ventured into the world of books.

‘The Book of Gifts’ released this Tuesday, September 30, in Portugal, by Casa das Letras, showcases some of her most popular works intertwined with small stories, always aiming to show that life is a gift to be cherished and celebrated. In the United Kingdom, the book was released in November 2024 and was a bestseller.

As the author highlights in the book’s preface, ‘The Book of Gifts’ was designed to be a comforting gift or a self-care read, with the “mission” of touching readers’ hearts and reminding them of the beauty of “gifts” that can be discovered (and shared) every day.

From love to friendship, hope to kindness, Lucy uses her art to reflect on the passage of time, celebrate goodness, and offer comfort in moments of loss or sadness.

As of today, ‘The Book of Gifts’ is also available in Portuguese bookstores.
