“More tents”? Montenegro “knows they are born on state land?”

“I perceived this statement, as has often been the case, as one of great inhumanity because Dr. Luís Montenegro should know that many people left Lisbon due to lack of housing solutions and living conditions, which increased the number of homeless, many of whom sought shelter with great indignity in the suburbs of Lisbon,” said José Luís Carneiro to journalists at the end of the first campaign event of the day in Faro.

The PS secretary-general believes this situation should “prompt the country’s prime minister to respond to citizens regarding what is being done to address housing issues.”

“I would now like to ask a question that I wish Dr. Luís Montenegro could answer: Is Dr. Luís Montenegro aware that many of these makeshift shelters are being erected on state and housing institute land?” he queried.

Carneiro suggests that if the prime minister is unaware of this situation, he “should visit and inquire” what the Ministry of Infrastructure is “doing to address this serious social issue”.

The PSD leader stated today that the resurgence of makeshift shelters and shantytowns has mainly occurred in socialist and communist municipalities, arguing that social-democratic mayors “do not just stand by” concerning this issue.

Luís Montenegro spoke during a luncheon with all district mayors in Lisbon, attended by all except independents Isaltino Morais (Oeiras) and Sérgio Galvão (Torres Vedras). The focus was mainly on housing and security issues in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
