“I am not saying that people need to be fired, nor am I saying there are too many people. What I am saying is that if this conclusion is reached, an evaluation must be conducted,” said Mariana Leitão in Castelo Branco, criticizing the firm statements by the prime minister and the minister of State Reform assuring that no one will be dismissed.
She stated, “That is not a serious way to approach the situation, nor to view public administration,” during an event in Castelo Branco marking the launch of the election campaign for the October 12 municipal elections.
“We don’t know exactly how many people there are” in the State, but “what we do know is that in the past ten years, the number of civil servants increased by more than one hundred thousand, including during the current Government,” she supported.
“We need to understand what needs these people came to address. Why are we hiring more people while still facing the same issues in public services, whether in health, education, or problems with doctors, nurses, operational technicians, or teachers?” questioned the liberal leader.
Therefore, the Liberal Initiative calls for “a thorough, objective, and impartial evaluation of reality, to identify the needs we have to meet, and work based on concrete and objective data.”
Mariana Leitão acknowledges that this stance does not benefit the party in regions with high public employment dependency, such as the interior of the country.
“The Liberal Initiative does not forgo principles or the solutions the country needs for electoral reasons,” and “we will always defend what we believe are the solutions that the country needs, regardless of our electoral objectives,” declared the party leader, on the sidelines of the rally in Castelo Branco.
