The PSD/CDS-PP candidate for the Viana do Castelo City Hall, Paulo de Morais, has declared that transparency will be a central theme if elected in the October municipal elections, along with public services that are currently “very poor.”
Paulo de Morais emphasized the necessity to “end, once and for all, the climate of cronyism that pervades the municipality of Viana do Castelo.” He stressed, “Transparency, clear ideas, clear projects, and above all, very clear criteria in the relationships between the municipality and the residents, between the municipality and businesses and entities, are fundamental.”
With a degree in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Industrial Management from the University of Porto, 61-year-old Paulo de Morais advocates for the implementation of a “mechanism to control cronyism.”
The PSD/CDS-PP candidate noted that “in terms of urban planning, services function almost like a funnel.” “Investments don’t progress because only those who have influence over the municipality, over the city hall, manage to realize their projects. This needs to end,” he asserted.
The former deputy mayor of Porto (2002-2015), who left the PSD in 2013 and enters this election as an independent candidate, added that public services are at the “same level,” one of the priorities in the 61-page program supporting his candidacy.
“Garbage collection is abysmal, almost medieval. Waste management is also very poor, and the public space is in a calamitous state. The streets are full of potholes; there is no maintenance system for public spaces and roads as it should be,” the university professor reiterated.
