Erosion and offshore wind farms among 15 challenges for aquatic ecosystems

The research was published in the journal “Environmental and Sustainability Indicators” and announced in a statement by ARNET – Aquatic Research Network.

Scientists have identified 15 major challenges for aquatic ecosystems in Portugal that will define the next decade in aquatic research, emphasizing the importance of proactive management and science-based public policies.

The document highlights the need to expand and interconnect Marine Protected Areas. Regarding freshwater ecosystems, it underscores the identification of biodiversity refuges during drought periods and the ecological and social risks of large water transport projects between regions, such as the Alqueva Transvase Project.

In cross-cutting topics, the study refers to the necessity of developing new solutions to detect and remove emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, or microplastics, and the focus on restoring aquatic ecosystems.

“To address the challenges and opportunities facing national aquatic ecosystems, researchers call for increased public and private investment in science and innovation, to prepare the country for emerging risks and enhance sustainable solutions,” the statement reads.

They also stress the importance of “continuous collaboration” among scientists, policymakers, and local communities, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation, allowing for anticipation of risks and support of science-based public policies.

The research was conducted by a team of 18 researchers from ARNET – Aquatic Research Network, encompassing three research and development units. It was funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

ARNET is a national-scale Associate Laboratory that integrates three research centers: MARE – Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences (represented by the University of Coimbra, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, University of Lisbon, New University of Lisbon, ISPA – University Institute, Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, University of Évora, and ARDITI / University of Madeira), CBMA – Center for Molecular and Environmental Biology (University of Minho), and CIMA – Center for Marine and Environmental Research (University of Algarve).
