An inspection targeting professional fishing activities took place on Tuesday in collaboration with the Regional Inspection of Fisheries and Maritime Uses, conducted off the coast of Terceira Island.
The National Maritime Authority reported that during the operation, the Maritime Police identified a professional fishing vessel operating in a prohibited area using a fishing technique known as ‘bottom longline’. As a result, a notice of infraction was issued, and approximately 115 kg of fish and around 3,700 meters of fishing gear were seized as a precautionary measure.
According to a statement from the National Maritime Authority, the seized fish were sold at auction, with the proceeds allocated to the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
The operation involved three members of the Local Command of the Maritime Police from Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island, along with an inspector from the Regional Inspection of Fisheries and Maritime Uses, supported by a vessel and a vehicle.
