
The National Maritime Authority reported 1,120 rescues, 3,787 first aid actions, and 18 fatalities on Portuguese beaches between May 1 and September 30, as stated in an official release.
During the bathing season, seven individuals drowned in unsupervised maritime areas: two in the Douro River, two in the Minho River, one at Armação de Pera Beach in the Algarve, one in the Óbidos Lagoon (Leiria district), and one at Ponta do Passo in Porto Santo (Madeira Island), with the latter two occurring in the last month.
The official bathing season commenced on June 1 and concluded on Tuesday. Prior to this period, in May, two children drowned at Pedrógão Beach (Leiria district), a time when it was unsupervised.
Within the bathing season, three individuals drowned at monitored beaches: Carcavelos Beach (Lisbon district), Titan Beach (Porto district), and Formosa Beach in Funchal, Madeira Island.
The Maritime Authority also recorded five deaths due to sudden illness, one of which occurred at the unsupervised beach of São Martinho do Porto, in Leiria district.
The report further notes one death from unknown causes in the Douro River at Montante Ribeira de Abade.
