Belém Cultural Center starts the workshop cycle ‘Creative Affinities’

“Eight weeks, eight meetings” is the theme of the cycle curated by the theatrical production structure founded by Cristina Carvalhal, which will host workshops with invited artists and groups. The aim is to “share creative processes in the performing arts,” according to the CCB program.

“This cycle is proposed as a space for reflection, affection, and interaction among peers and audiences,” states the CCB, adding that at the end of each two-day workshop, there will be a public moment where the results of the reflection will be presented.

Gaya de Medeiros, Flávia Gusmão, David Marques, Teresa Coutinho, Teatro da Cidade, Aurora Negra, Os Possessos, and Má-Criação are the artists and groups participating in the cycle.

The first public session will take place on the 8th at 19:00, in the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen room at the CCB, with dancer and choreographer Gaya de Medeiros.

This session will follow a workshop scheduled for the 6th and 7th, based on a set of practices that have helped the artist to “question physical preparation/self-care, the possibilities of relationship with the audience, and dramaturgical strategies in approaching autobiographical and identity themes,” adds the CCB.

The workshop aims to “be a space for exchange, individual/collective challenge, and vulnerability,” says the CCB, regarding the initiative by the 31-year-old Brazilian dancer, director, and producer, founder of the BRABA platform, intended to facilitate creative actions directed and led by trans/non-binary people.

The second session of the cycle is set for the 20th and 21st, with actress and director Flávia Gusmão, aiming to “share work processes mainly related to the idea of biography on stage, theater and community, ‘site specific’ work and collaborative work,” adds the CCB.

Flávia Gusmão graduated from the Professional Theater School of Cascais between 1993 and 1996, joining the Teatro Experimental de Cascais (TEC) ensemble that year, where she stayed until 2003. Between 2003 and 2005, she was part of Teatro da Garagem.

Since then, she has worked with directors in Portugal, Italy, and Scotland. In 2014, she won the Portuguese Authors Society (SPA) award for Best Actress.

In addition to internships in Rio de Janeiro with Enrique Diaz and Cia. dos Atores, Flávia Gusmão also signs her creations, many in Cape Verde.

The third session is scheduled for October 27 and 28, with choreographer, performer, and researcher David Marques, who will seek to “articulate his different experiences as a dance artist — in creation, interpretation, pedagogy, and curatorship — sharing the motivations and conditions that favor his artistic practice, consolidated and experimental work methodologies, and ethical-aesthetic positions.”

The group led by the artist, who also develops work in creation, interpretation, pedagogy, and curatorship, is “invited to participate actively” in the sessions, where themes such as “self-fiction, enunciation, mystery, and paradox” will be particularly important.

The fourth session will be led by actress, creator, and playwright Teresa Coutinho on November 3 and 4.

From the fifth to eighth sessions, theatrical structures will be involved: Teatro da Cidade (November 10 and 11), Aurora Negra (November 24 and 25), Os Possessos (December 1 and 2), and Má-Criação (December 8 and 9).

Without a venue yet mentioned, similar to previous ones, the public sessions will always take place the day after the workshops.

Public sessions have free entry, with tickets available two hours before at the CCB box office.
