TO THE MINUTE: Rents? Soares challenges Carneiro; PS reminds of Costa’s work

The PSD/CDS-PP candidate for Mayor of Viana do Castelo, Paulo de Morais, stated that transparency will be a central theme if he wins the October municipal elections, along with addressing the “very poor” public services currently in place.

Paulo de Morais emphasized the need to “end the widespread cronyism in the municipality of Viana do Castelo once and for all.” “Transparency, clear ideas, clear projects, and above all, very clear criteria in the relationship between the municipality and the citizens, as well as between the municipality and companies and entities, are essential,” he noted.

A graduate in Mathematics and holding a Ph.D. in Engineering and Industrial Management from the University of Porto, Paulo de Morais, aged 61, advocates for the implementation of a “mechanism to control cronyism.”

The PSD/CDS-PP candidate remarked, “The urban planning services function almost like a funnel.” “Investments do not move forward because only those with influence over the municipality, over the council, manage to execute their projects. This must stop,” he asserted.

The former Vice-President of the Porto City Council (2002-2025), who left the PSD in 2013 and is running as an independent, indicated that public services are at the “same level,” being one of the priorities of the 61-page program supporting his candidacy.

“Garbage collection is abysmal, almost medieval. Waste treatment is also very poor, and the public space itself is in a calamitous state. The streets are full of potholes; there is no maintenance system for public spaces and roads as it should be,” reinforced the university professor.
