The São Jorge cinema in Lisbon and the Trindade in Porto mark the official opening of a festival dedicated to Francophone cinema with a film that recreates the production and shooting of ‘Breathless,’ a modern classic of French cinema filmed by Jean-Luc Godard in the summer of 1959, starring Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
Linklater’s film features performances by Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Zoey Deutch.
The 26th French Film Festival runs in Lisbon until the 12th and in Porto until the 8th, with further programming in Coimbra, Lagos, Almada, and Beja in the following weeks.
In collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the festival in Lisbon will showcase a retrospective dedicated to the French actor Alain Delon, who passed away in 2024. Before the official start of the festival, Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes Festival and the Institut Lumière, presented the film “Lumière, the Adventure Continues!”
This year, the festival includes new initiatives, such as an event focused on Lusophone-Francophone co-productions for those developing feature film debuts, with selected projects by Pocas Pascoal, Ágata Pinho, Pedro Neto, Alexander David, Francisco Mira Godinho, and Diogo Baldaia.
The competitive section includes films such as ‘L’Engloutie’ by Louise Hémon, ‘Ma frère’ by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret, ‘Love me Tender’ by Anna Cazenave, ‘Les rendez-vous de l’été’ by Valentine Cadic, ‘Le roi soleil’ by Vincent Mael Cardona, and ‘La Pampa’ by Antoine Chevrollier.
The French Film Festival has a new artistic director, Anne Delseth.
