The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, emphasized the importance of discussing migration policies during a recent visit to Copenhagen, Denmark. After a working breakfast with British Labour leader Keir Starmer, Montenegro stated, “My objective is precisely to present our migration policies and also learn from others’ experiences.”
Montenegro revealed that he addressed migration issues with Starmer. During the European Political Community meeting, he also participated in a roundtable discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other prime ministers on this pressing matter.
“There are various migration pressures in Europe, each region facing unique challenges,” remarked the social-democratic leader. Montenegro noted that the British Prime Minister mentioned, “The greatest pressure we face are the boats crossing from France to the United Kingdom.”
In contrast, Montenegro explained that Portugal experiences fewer instances of migrants arriving by boat. “Our immigrants typically do not arrive by boat — very few do. This phenomenon has been quite contained in Portugal. I had the opportunity to share with him the accumulated efforts in legalizing processes over the past years,” he added.
Referring to Denmark, where these statements were made, Montenegro commented on the socialist Danish government, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which may have an even more assertive stance on regulating and containing certain migratory flows.
