Almost 1,900 bird flu outbreaks in Europe (Portugal accounts for 27)

From October 1, 2024, to September 19 of this year, a total of 1,876 bird flu outbreaks were recorded, with 1,159 occurring in wild birds.

Among these, 563 were detected in poultry and 154 in captive birds.

By country, Hungary reported 343 outbreaks, followed by Germany with 279, the Netherlands with 234, Poland at 208, and Italy with 152.

Additional reports came from Austria with 72, Spain with 63, Belgium with 55, France with 50, Slovenia with 48, the Czech Republic with 46, Norway with 46, Iceland with 33, Portugal with 27, Moldova with 26, Slovakia with 24, and Ireland with 23.

Countries with fewer than 20 outbreaks include Denmark with 19, Sweden with 14, Bulgaria with 14, Croatia with 13, the United Kingdom with 13, Romania with 12, Turkey with 10, Switzerland with nine, Ukraine with eight, Finland with seven, Albania with seven, Serbia with five, Lithuania with five, and Greece with three.

The Republic of North Macedonia, the Faroe Islands, and Bosnia-Herzegovina each reported two cases, while Latvia and Estonia reported one each.

In the past month alone, 75 outbreaks were confirmed, 63 of which were in wild birds.

Spain leads with 32 outbreaks, followed by Norway with 24.

Germany reported six, Portugal five, the Netherlands three, Bulgaria three, and France two.

The transmission of the virus to humans is rare, with sporadic cases reported worldwide. However, when it occurs, the infection can lead to severe clinical conditions.
