A 58-year-old woman was detained by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Saturday, October 4th, suspected of starting a forest fire in a parish of the Alvaiázare municipality early that morning.
In a statement, the PJ indicated that the suspect, “using a lighter and white firelighters, ignited the fire that consumed approximately 3,500 square meters of forest area densely populated by eucalyptus, mature maritime pine, oak, and brushwood.”
The authority noted that the fire had “a significant potential to cause loss of human life and substantial damage, if not for the prompt and effective intervention of firefighters.”
The woman, who “has no known criminal record, is an employee at a parish council, where she performs functions including those of a forest sapper.”
The detainee will appear for a preliminary judicial hearing to determine precautionary measures.
