“I want to tell you that we already have a commitment for the future. In 2028, it will be 900 years since the Battle of S. Mamede, which was the first foundation of Portuguese nationality, as António Magalhães [former mayor], Domingos Bragança [current mayor], and now Ricardo Costa [PS candidate] have said. It is time to dedicate a national holiday to the founding day of our country,” he stated.
José Luís Carneiro was speaking this afternoon at the PS municipal rally in Guimarães, which featured a performance by Zé Amaro before and after the political speeches, advocating from the stage a long-standing aspiration of the socialist-led municipality.
According to the PS leader, “it is fair and a tribute to those who today continue to make Guimarães one of the most entrepreneurial cities in the country.”
“An economy that creates wealth from innovation. As Fernando Medina [former PS minister who joined the campaign today] mentioned, the economy we believe in for the country is one based on knowledge, innovation, and creativity,” he emphasized.
This is why, Carneiro asserts, the PS believes “in teaching, in education, in the qualification of Portuguese men and women.”
“Because more qualified people, people better prepared to face the challenges of the future, are individuals who contribute to social development, but also to a new knowledge-based economy,” he pointed out.
Former Finance Minister Fernando Medina joined the PS leader’s national tour today in Guimarães and, in his speech, criticized the Government for having a regressive agenda for the country.
D. Afonso Henriques won the Battle of S. Mamede on June 24, 1128.
The victory near Guimarães paved the way for the kingdom’s independence.
