Santos Silva, César, Medina, Vieira da Silva join Carneiro in the campaign

The official spokesperson for the Socialist Party (PS) has announced that during the second week of the municipal election campaign, party secretary-general José Luís Carneiro will be joined by prominent socialist figures at various campaign events.

The sequence begins on Saturday with a dinner rally in Santarém featuring former minister José António Vieira da Silva.

The following day, Carneiro will be accompanied by ex-president of the Assembly of the Republic Augusto Santos Silva during a late morning campaign action in Matosinhos. Later that day, former minister and ex-mayor of Lisbon Fernando Medina will join in Guimarães.

Throughout the week, the PS president, Carlos César, along with former ministers Mariana Vieira da Silva and Duarte Cordeiro, PS parliamentary leader Eurico Brilhante Dias, and MEPs Francisco Assis and Marta Temido, will be present alongside the PS secretary-general as he travels the country.

This election marks José Luís Carneiro’s first as the PS secretary-general.

According to party data, the PS is running in 306 out of 308 municipalities, only excluding Vizela and Santana, mostly on solo lists.

Exceptions to these solo candidacies include 13 coalition-led mayoral campaigns in cities such as Lisbon, Sintra, Braga, and Coimbra, as well as backing for eight citizen groups.

In the last municipal elections in 2021, the PS, then led by António Costa, was in government.

The PS won those elections, securing 149 mayorships (one in coalition with Livre), 1,285 parish presidencies, and control of 163 municipal assemblies.

The socialists currently lead both the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) and the National Association of Parishes (ANAFRE), goals that José Luís Carneiro has reaffirmed for this election, expressing confidence in victory.
