“Bringing other topics into the local elections is an insult to local governance”

“I consider bringing other topics into the municipal elections a disservice to local government. For one reason: municipal elections are one of the greatest victories of democratic Portugal. Our mayors are the closest political power has to offer to citizens; they are the ones on the streets every day solving their problems,” highlighted Nuno Melo.

During a walkabout in Oliveira do Bairro, in the district of Aveiro, Nuno Melo visited several establishments to distribute pamphlets and greetings, alongside the current Mayor, Duarte Novo, who is seeking reelection for a third term.

Asked by journalists whether there were grounds to open an investigation into the company Spinumviva, the CDS-PP leader criticized the emergence of this issue during the municipal election campaign.

“I think only those with no chance in these municipal elections would contaminate them with other topics. They can’t elect anyone, have no expectations of winning anything, and therefore have to invent other matters,” he argued.

According to Nuno Melo, the focus of the CDS is on supporting the party’s candidates.

“I am with them on the streets every day, fighting with them every day because I know their victory is the best for their council, their territories, their communities,” he added.

Refraining from naming who has brought up the Spinumviva issue during the municipal campaign, he emphasized that it has not been his party.

“Everyone chooses their own agendas, priorities, and ours are with our mayors, with our values, ideas, projects, and candidates. Invariably, our candidates are highly recognized in their communities, who step forward to put what they have achieved in life at the service of politics, and in these times, that is also an opportunity for voters,” he concluded.
