“I have thoughts on that, of course. What is incomprehensible to me is why an investigation has not been opened; I think the prosecutor of the Republic should explain why an inquiry was not initiated,” José Luís Carneiro told reporters during a walkabout in Coimbra, when asked about recent developments regarding the family business of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
Carneiro argued that “a preventive investigation” serves “to prevent crimes from being committed,” and in the case of Spinumviva, the acts in question “have already been committed.”
“Therefore, that is a question only the Attorney General of the Republic can answer, and I will say no more. What I understand is that a prime minister of a country cannot be under suspicion,” he emphasized, asserting that these issues need to be clarified with “speed and tranquility.”
