The National Republican Guard (GNR) will have a “special security operation” in place for the celebrations of the last apparition of Our Lady in Fátima to the three shepherd children on October 13.
In a statement to the press, the GNR offers a set of recommendations for all pilgrims traveling to Fátima and participating safely in the celebrations:
- “Arrive early to avoid long lines;
- Identify, memorize, or photograph the location where you park your vehicle or the bus drop-off point;
- Do not leave belongings visible inside vehicles;
- Do not leave personal documents in vehicles, always keep them with you;
- Carry your wallet/mobile phone close to your body;
- Avoid carrying large amounts of money;
- Do not carry valuable items or ostentatious objects;
- Always have your mobile phone charged and have contact information for other group members;
- After the ceremonies end, exit calmly and gradually to avoid crowding;
- Keep a close eye on elderly people and children accompanying you.”
The authority states that the operation will be implemented on October 12 and 13, and that “patrols on the main access routes to the city of Fátima” will be intensified. The GNR will focus on “three main areas of action”:
- “Ensuring road safety and traffic flow near Fátima;
- Preventing illicit activities, incivility, or disturbances of public order;
- Ensuring a peaceful and safe environment throughout the event through awareness and support for pilgrims.”
The operation will involve GNR personnel “from various specialties,” including “territorial and traffic units, criminal investigation structures, cycle and horseback patrols, public order and special operations units, bomb disposal teams, and surveillance using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, and a video surveillance system.”
The National Republican Guard also emphasizes that in the area of the Fátima Sanctuary and its surroundings, the use of drones will not be allowed.
