A Portuguese national was trapped for several days in a tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey, after losing his passport and becoming disoriented while searching for the consulate.
The story is reported today by various local media outlets, although the rescue took place about a month ago, on September 11.
According to the Turkish press, the man became trapped between the walls of a tunnel after seeking refuge there as a place to sleep due to his missing passport and difficulty finding the Portuguese consulate.
The incident is believed to have occurred between late August and early September, but the Portuguese man was only freed on the 11th of the last month.
He was found by authorities partially clothed, dehydrated, and suffering from injuries in several parts of his body, following a rescue operation involving dozens of personnel. The operation lasted six hours and required breaking through a concrete wall.
In the hospital, the man, identified as “Caires Ferreira,” 45, revealed that he traveled in late August to Istanbul from Portugal. At some point, he lost his passport and began living on the streets. Days after his arrival, he decided to seek shelter in the tunnel, a decision that unfortunately led to his predicament.
After the rescue and medical treatment at the hospital, the man was reportedly deported.
