The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) announced that, in addition to reviewing the municipal election results, the Central Committee will assess the political and social landscape and the party’s upcoming tasks.

The meeting’s conclusions will be presented by the PCP’s secretary-general, Paulo Raimundo, at a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Lisbon at 6:00 PM.

Sunday’s municipal elections delivered the worst result ever for the CDU, which saw its number of municipalities decrease from 19 in 2021 to 12.

The coalition lost the district capitals of Évora and Setúbal, retaining only eight of the municipalities it held in 2021: Barrancos, Cuba, Arraiolos, Silves, Avis, Palmela, Seixal, and Sesimbra.

Paulo Raimundo acknowledged the “negative result” and that the CDU had higher ambitions. However, he noted “elements of resilience,” such as the acquisition of four new municipalities: Montemor-o-Novo, Mora, Sines, and Aljustrel.

Raimundo also highlighted a “voting evolution” for the CDU nationally compared to the legislative elections in May, referring to the national vote count increasing from 183,000 to 316,000.

“Are we deeply satisfied with the results? No. Would we like to have achieved more? Yes, we thought that the populations needed more strength from us. This is what we have, and with this, we will move forward,” stated Paulo Raimundo on Sunday night.
