A meeting of this body is scheduled for the evening at the PS headquarters in Lisbon, while earlier, at 18:00, the Secretary-General of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, will meet with the Socialist Parliamentary Group in the Assembly of the Republic to discuss the OE2026.
Still in the election campaign, on the day when the government’s budget proposal was submitted, the PS leader hinted at the possibility of enabling the budget and argued that the presented document meets the demands placed on the Prime Minister, deferring the decision to the bodies with which he now plans to meet.
In the local elections on Sunday, the PS lost its status as the principal municipal force in Portugal and secured the presidency of 128 municipalities, two of them in coalition, down from 149 municipalities in 2021, one of which was in coalition.
The socialists have thus lost the leadership of the ANMP to the PSD and once again failed in the goal of capturing Lisbon and Porto.
Carneiro managed to halt the electoral erosion of the PS following the legislative collapse, fulfilling the aim of increasing the number of district capitals, with key victories including the capture of Évora, Faro, Coimbra, Bragança, and Viseu.
