A 19-year-old man was detained by the Public Security Police (PSP) after threatening a shop owner with a kitchen knife during an attempted robbery in the Sintra area.
In a statement released on Monday, the PSP described how “the suspect, armed with a kitchen knife, entered a commercial establishment, approached the shop owner located near the cash register, and pointing the knife demanded all the money he had.”
The victim resisted, prompting the young man to brandish the knife in her direction, “attempting to stab her.” To protect himself, the shop owner “picked up a stick and displayed it to the suspect.”
Nevertheless, the suspect persisted in his attempt to commit the robbery and “threw various objects found in the shop onto the floor and towards the victim.”
However, he realized he would not succeed in robbing the victim and fled the scene without taking anything.
The suspect was identified by a witness “who was present and observed the entire situation.”
“With the swift intervention of the officers from the Sintra Criminal Investigation Squad, it was possible to gather crucial material evidence that led to the issuance of arrest warrants by the competent Judicial Authority,” the PSP stated.
The suspect was detained and brought before the Judicial Authority for the initial judicial interrogation, and he was remanded in custody.
